Freo with kids: the parts we'd actually keep

👋 Hey lovely travellers,

A little confession before we start: my Fremantle content was written pre-kids, on a babymoon, with rather a lot of brewery visits involved. So this week's newsletter comes with an asterisk, some of Freo is still very much a "grown-ups only" itinerary, but there's genuinely enough here to make a great family day (or two) out of it, once you know which bits to lean into.

⚓ Fremantle with Kids

🏰 The Best Things To Do In Fremantle, Western Australia
Skip the brewery crawl for now and head straight for the Fremantle Markets on a weekend morning instead. Great coffee, easy grazing food, and enough stalls to keep little legs entertained without a strict itinerary. Save Little Creatures and Bread in Common for a date night once the babysitter's booked.

🔓 A guide to visiting Fremantle Round House
Western Australia's oldest public building, and a genuinely easy one with kids. It's small, it's a gold coin donation, and you can be in and out in under an hour, which is basically the perfect amount of "history" for a small attention span.

🔒 Is Fremantle Prison worth visiting?
The full tours involve a lot of stairs and some genuinely eerie convict history that's more of a "when the kids are older" activity. But the Gatehouse area out front is free, stair-free, and gives you enough of the atmosphere for a quick stop without committing to the whole tour.

🧠 Family Travel Tip of the Week: The Free Gatehouse Rule

Plenty of historic sites (prisons, forts, museums) let you explore the entrance or grounds for free before you commit to a paid tour.

⭐ Peek in for free first, gauge the room (and the kids' patience)
⭐ If everyone's still keen, upgrade to the full ticket or tour
⭐ If not, you've had a genuinely nice ten minutes and nobody's out any money

It's a good way to "try before you buy" on anything historical with little ones in tow.

🏙️ The Best City Breaks In Australia
Fremantle made this list for good reason, and if you're weighing it up against other Aussie city breaks for your next family long weekend, this is the one to bookmark for the full comparison.

❤️ Thanks for being here

Not every trip needs to be a full itinerary overhaul. Sometimes it's just picking the bits that work for where your family's at right now, and saving the rest for later.

See you next Thursday,
Emma

👋 Hey lovely travellers, Every year around this time my inbox fills up with the same question: where should we actually go for the Christmas holidays. So instead of answering it one at a time, here’s my shortlist. 👋 Hey lovely travellers, Two classic Sydney escapes, properly covered this time instead of just a quick mention. The Blue Mountains gets the deep dive it deserves, and Hunter Valley gets an honest “yes, even with kids” verdict. 🚗 Blue Mountains & Hunter Valley 🏔️ Things to Do in the Blue Mountains with Kids My answer to “is it worth visiting with kids” is yes, full stop, no caveats. Flat lookouts right next to the car park, a theme-park-style day at Scenic World, and enough variety to build...

👋 Hey lovely travellers, We’re closing out the French Riviera series with the two towns everyone asks about and forgets to actually visit: Monaco and Grasse, plus the hilltop village I somehow haven’t sent you yet. 🌍 French Riviera: the last stops 🎰 How to Have the Perfect Day Trip in Monaco Yes, with kids. Pay less than two euros, hop on a bus, and you’re in another country within the hour, novelty alone usually buys you good behaviour for at least twenty minutes. The Oceanographic Museum is...
