The Sydney beach locals actually go to

👋 Hey lovely travellers,

I know I've already covered Sydney's big-ticket stuff, so this week is for the spots that don't make the "top 10 things to do in Sydney" lists but that locals (me, mostly) actually rate for a family day out.

🏙️ Sydney & NSW Hidden Gems

🏖️ Is Balmoral Beach worth visiting in Sydney?
A sheltered little bay most tourists walk straight past, and one of my go-to spots for a low-stress picnic and a paddle. Calm water, no big waves to worry about, and a genuinely local feel.

🌲 The Best Things To Do In The Royal National Park
Sydney's answer to a proper national park day out, minus the flight. It's a huge area so you'll want a car, but the payoff is beaches and bushland without another soul in sight.

🚗 The Best Day Trips from Sydney
From pelican feeding at The Entrance to tulip season in Bowral, this is the round up for whenever you're ready to get out of the city for the day. Something for every age and every attention span.

🧠 Family Travel Tip of the Week: The Locals-Only Detour

Every big city has a version of "the beach everyone goes to" and "the beach everyone who lives there actually goes to."

⭐ Everyone goes to: Bondi, Manly
⭐ Locals go to: Balmoral, Avoca Beach
⭐ The trade-off: slightly less iconic, significantly fewer crowds and easier parking

Worth the small detour, every single time, especially with kids who don't need the main attraction to have a great day.

⭐ Featured Post of the Week

🚗 The Best Day Trips from Sydney
This is the one to bookmark if you're a Sydney local or just visiting for a while. Whale watching, pelican feeding, tulip festivals and historic villages, all within reach for a day trip.

❤️ Thanks for being here

Sometimes the best family day out is the one nobody else is queuing for. Here's to more of those.

See you next Thursday,
Emma

A body of water with trees in the background

👋 Hey lovely travellers, Every year around this time my inbox fills up with the same question: where should we actually go for the Christmas holidays. So instead of answering it one at a time, here’s my shortlist. Warm, kid-friendly, and not fully booked out yet (probably). 🌞 Christmas Getaway Shortlist 🇲🇹 Malta With Kids: Everything You Need to Know Small enough to not feel overwhelming, warm enough for proper beach days, and quiet enough in December that you won’t be fighting the whole of...

a kangaroo sitting on a dirt path

👋 Hey lovely travellers, Two classic Sydney escapes, properly covered this time instead of just a quick mention. The Blue Mountains gets the deep dive it deserves, and Hunter Valley gets an honest “yes, even with kids” verdict. 🚗 Blue Mountains & Hunter Valley 🏔️ Things to Do in the Blue Mountains with Kids My answer to “is it worth visiting with kids” is yes, full stop, no caveats. Flat lookouts right next to the car park, a theme-park-style day at Scenic World, and enough variety to build...

Historic hilltop village with green trees under a blue sky

👋 Hey lovely travellers, We’re closing out the French Riviera series with the two towns everyone asks about and forgets to actually visit: Monaco and Grasse, plus the hilltop village I somehow haven’t sent you yet. 🌍 French Riviera: the last stops 🎰 How to Have the Perfect Day Trip in Monaco Yes, with kids. Pay less than two euros, hop on a bus, and you’re in another country within the hour, novelty alone usually buys you good behaviour for at least twenty minutes. The Oceanographic Museum is...
